Treating Keloids with Adjuvant High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy

ABSTRACT

The clinical literature supports the role of postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy for keloids in decreasing the risk of recurrence. Although less commonly employed than external beam radiation adjuvant brachytherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment modality with minimal adverse effects. An institutional retrospective review analyzing the clinical results for 27 patients with 39 keloids treated with surgical excision and postoperative HDR brachytherapy to a dose of 18 Gy in 3 fractions within 36 hours following excision will be presented.
