Radiotherapy for the Treatment of Keloids

Abstract

Radiotherapy has been an effective primary and adjuvant therapy for many benign
fibroproliferative disorders including keloids. The risk of recurrence after local excision of keloids is high. The literature supporting the important role of postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy for keloids in decreasing to less than 25% the risk of recurrence is reviewed. External beam radiation has been the principal modality but more recently evidence is described indicating the superiority of brachytherapy over other modalities.
